One-on-One Research Coaching for African Postgraduate Scholars | AOSARS
Applied Research Skills · One-on-One Coaching

Get unstuck with a coach who knows your work.

Most theses stall not for lack of ideas, but for lack of someone in your corner. AOSARS coaching gives you that: one coach, working with you one-on-one, who reads your own writing every week, marks it the way a fair examiner would, and shows you exactly what to fix next. Two focused programmes, proposal writing and academic writing skills, take you from stuck to moving. The work, and the words on the page, stay yours throughout.

What a coach actually does

The things a coach does that a video never can.

A thesis rarely stalls on ideas. It stalls on the work around them: being read honestly, getting unstuck, troubleshooting the software, holding your nerve, and writing to a standard you cannot yet see in your own pages. That is what a coach is for, and it is the part a recording cannot give you. Open any one to see what working one-on-one with a coach changes.

They read the pages you actually wrote

Your coach reads the work you produced this week, your real draft, and tells you what is working and what is not, line by line. None of it is generic; all of it is about your study.

Why this matters: Advice in the abstract is easy to nod at and hard to apply. Feedback on your own pages is the thing that actually moves the thesis.

In a session, you can
  • Hear exactly what a fair examiner would flag in your draft
  • See how to fix this paragraph, not paragraphs in general
  • Bring a messy section and leave with a cleaner one
  • Stop guessing whether your own work is good enough
  • Walk away with the next three things to do, in order
See the two programmes

They hold you to a weekly rhythm

A standing one-on-one session creates a gentle deadline that is hard to ignore, so the work keeps moving instead of slipping quietly to next month, and the month after.

Why this matters: Most theses stall not from difficulty but from drift. One person expecting your progress is the strongest cure there is.

In a session, you can
  • Turn up each week with something actually done
  • Break an overwhelming thesis into the next small step
  • Get through the quiet weeks when motivation dips
  • Keep momentum across the long middle of the work
  • Finish the milestone you keep postponing
See the two programmes

They talk it through, back and forth

Coaching is a conversation, not a broadcast. You ask the question that is actually blocking you, and your coach answers it for your study, right there, until it makes sense.

Why this matters: The one question a recorded course never anticipates is usually the exact one holding you up this week.

In a session, you can
  • Ask the awkward, specific question and get a real answer
  • Test an idea out loud before you commit weeks to it
  • Resolve the doubt that has quietly been slowing you down
  • Go back and forth until it truly clicks
  • Leave with a decision, not more reading to do
See the two programmes

They get you moving again

When you hit a dead end, a method that will not fit, an argument that keeps collapsing, your coach works through it with you until you are unstuck and moving again.

Why this matters: A single wall can cost weeks when you face it alone. With someone beside you, it often costs an afternoon.

In a session, you can
  • Diagnose why a section simply will not come together
  • Find a way through a methodological dead end
  • Rescue an argument that keeps falling apart
  • Turn a week of frustration into a clear next step
  • Replace panic with a plan you can act on
See the two programmes

They troubleshoot the tools, live

When Word, your reference manager, Turnitin or your analysis tool fights back, you share your screen and your coach helps you fix it on the spot, on your own file, not a demo file.

Why this matters: The tutorial always works. Your machine, with your messy document, often does not. That gap is where coaching earns its keep.

In a session, you can
  • Fix the formatting that will not behave, on your document
  • Clean a broken reference library while you watch
  • Read your own similarity report with someone beside you
  • Get the tool doing what you need, not what the demo did
  • Stop losing evenings to a setting you cannot find
See the two programmes

They keep you steady

A coach is in your corner. They calm the nerves, name the impostor feeling for what it is, and remind you, with evidence from your own pages, that the work is good enough.

Why this matters: Confidence is not a soft extra. It is what lets you submit, present and stand in the defence and answer.

In a session, you can
  • Walk into the defence steadier, not dreading it
  • Quiet the voice that says you are not good enough
  • Hear honest encouragement from someone who knows your work
  • Regain your footing after a difficult week
  • Believe the thesis is finishable, because someone has finished one with you

They hold the bar where the examiner holds it

Your coach reads your draft the way a fair examiner would, so you find the weak points before the examiner does, and fix them while there is still time.

Why this matters: Knowing whether your work clears the bar is worth more than any checklist of things to remember.

In a session, you can
  • See your own draft through an examiner's eyes
  • Catch the hard question before the defence, not in it
  • Know which parts are ready and which are not
  • Lift a passable chapter into a strong one
  • Reduce the corrections that come back
See the two programmes

They shape the plan around you

Coaching bends to your supervisor's deadlines, your job and your family, so the plan fits the life you actually have, not an ideal student who does nothing else.

Why this matters: A plan you can keep beats a perfect plan you abandon in week three.

In a session, you can
  • Match the pace to your supervision timeline
  • Fit sessions around work and family
  • Push hard before a deadline, then ease off
  • Re-plan when life gets in the way, without losing the thread
  • Keep going at a pace you can sustain to the end

The coaching programmes

Two programmes. One coach who knows your work.

Two one-on-one programmes, as of now. Choose by where you are: shaping and writing the proposal, or strengthening the craft of academic writing. Each runs with a single coach on your own work, and each is offered in packages so you can take only the part you need. Throughout, the work, and the words on the page, stay yours; we coach, we never write it for you.

The skill set you build

The competencies you walk away able to use.

Coaching is about skill, the things you can do afterward, not just things you have heard explained. Across the two programmes your coach builds the competencies below with you, on your own thesis, week by week, until each one is yours. Every competency removes a specific place a thesis loses time or marks. This is what you walk away able to do.

Competency 1

Frame the study

Most theses stall before the method, in the gap between a rough topic and a problem stated sharply enough to defend. Your coach works it through with you until the topic, the problem, the questions and the framing hold together and survive scrutiny.

  • Background and problemWrite a background that earns the problem, and a problem statement that justifies the study.
  • Objectives and questionsSet objectives and research questions that align and can actually be answered.
  • Theoretical frameworkChoose and justify a theory that genuinely frames your variables.
  • Conceptual frameworkMap how your concepts connect before you write a line of method.
Competency 2

Build the evidence base

Finding enough current, information-rich material for each objective is harder than it looks, and a thin or dated evidence base quietly weakens every chapter built on it. Your coach builds the sourcing, organising and citation skills that put the right source in your hand on demand.

  • Source the literatureFind current, information-rich sources across the global-to-local funnel.
  • Organise and retrieveKeep a clean library and find the exact passage when you need it.
  • Critical empirical reviewReview studies critically and locate the gap, not just summarise them.
  • Automate citationsKeep in-text citations and the reference list in perfect, style-compliant agreement.
Competency 3

Defensible methodology

Methodology is where examiners probe hardest, and a choice you cannot justify sends the chapter back. Your coach helps you make the decisions early and defend each one, so the chapter answers the hard question before it is asked.

  • Defensible designChoose and justify a design that fits your questions and survives scrutiny.
  • Sampling and proceduresMatch sampling, instruments and procedures to your objectives.
  • Instruments that workDevelop and pretest your instruments before you reach the field.
  • Anticipate the examinerWrite a methodology chapter that answers the question before it is asked.
Competency 4

Write with craft

A review that lists studies instead of arguing comes back marked unclear, and for a chapter that can cost an entire term. Your coach builds the critical writing that turns a mountain of reading into an argument in your own voice, chapter by chapter.

  • Academic argumentBuild an argument that develops, instead of a report that lists.
  • The academic paragraphWrite paragraphs that carry a claim, the evidence and your own analysis.
  • Critical thinkingInterrogate and position sources rather than stack them.
  • Chapters One to ThreeDevelop the opening chapters to the standard examiners expect.
Competency 5

Integrity and tools

A similarity flag you cannot read, or a document that will not behave, can stall a thesis for months and cost marks you cannot afford. Your coach builds the originality, Turnitin and long-document skills that keep the work yours and the software working for you.

  • Originality and paraphrasingParaphrase and attribute so the work stays unmistakably yours.
  • Turnitin, read properlyRead a similarity report, understand what it means, and know how to act on it with integrity.
  • Ethical AI useUse AI within your university's rules, never to write for you.
  • Long-thesis Word skillsAutomate styles, numbering, captions and contents across a long document.
Competency 6

Assemble and defend

Every part has to come together as one coherent whole, and then be defended in the room, the two points where a strong study can still come undone. Your coach helps you assemble it and rehearse the defence, so you walk in prepared, not dreading it.

  • Assemble the proposalBring every section into one coherent, submission-ready proposal.
  • Prepare the defenceAnticipate the panel's questions and rehearse your answers.
  • Present and hold your groundPresent clearly and answer with composure under questioning.
  • Defend, not dreadWalk in ready, because you have rehearsed the hard questions with your coach.

Plays through on its own. Hover to pause, or click any competency to jump.

The skill set the two programmes build between them. Each competency is coached the same way: your coach demonstrates the technique on screen, watches you do it on your own material, and corrects you until it is automatic. You leave able to do it, not just able to describe it.

What you gain

Built to help you move faster, with fewer corrections, and skill that stays yours.

The scarcest resource in postgraduate work is time, lost to false starts, rework and chapters sent back. A coach who knows your study is there to help cut that: to help you move faster, with fewer rounds of correction, and to build competence you keep long after this thesis is bound.

01

Move from stuck to written, faster

The biggest cost in a thesis is time lost to false starts. You learn to turn what you know into worked, written pages from the first sitting, whatever your topic, so momentum replaces the blank page.

02

A coach who knows your study

The same person reads your work each week, so they know your topic, your supervisor's expectations and exactly where you are stuck, and the guidance is specific to you.

03

Source and appraise evidence

Find current, information-rich material fast and judge what truly belongs in serious academic work, so every chapter rests on firm ground.

04

Write so it comes back less often

Structure argument and prose to the standard examiners and reviewers respect, so chapters return for correction far less and the thesis keeps moving.

05

Work with integrity

Cite, paraphrase and attribute so Turnitin and AI detection confirm your standard, and the work stays unmistakably yours, every time.

Why AOSARS

The practical craft a thesis runs on, coached until it is yours.

The practical craft of research, sourcing, methodology, writing and integrity, is rarely something a doctoral candidate has had the chance to build hands-on, and that gap quietly costs months. One-on-one coaching builds it with you, with a coach who reads your own work and proven methods that turn a stalled thesis into a moving one. Built in Africa since 2016 and priced in your own currency: applied research skill, coached until it is yours.

We answer every enquiry personally, usually within a day, before you commit to anything.

Will my coach write my thesis for me? +

No. Coaching guides you to do the work to a high standard. Your coach reads your own writing, marks it and rehearses with you, but the work, and the words on the page, stay yours throughout.

How often will we meet? +

One-on-one sessions run weekly, on video, at a time that fits your supervision timeline. Each package sets out how many sessions are included; you book them with your coach as you go.

Do I get the same coach every time? +

Yes. One named coach reads your work each week, so they know your topic, your supervisor's expectations and exactly where you are stuck. There is no rotation.

Which programme should I choose? +

If you are at the proposal stage, from concept to defence, choose Proposal Writing. If you want to strengthen the craft of academic writing and the tools behind it, choose Academic Writing Skills. Not sure? Book a fit call and we will help you choose.

Do I need to be at a specific university? +

No. Scholars work with us from across Africa and beyond. Coaching applies to Masters and PhD work in any discipline and at any institution.

Can I take just part of a programme? +

Yes. Each programme is offered in packages, so you can take just the part you need now, for example the concept stage, and add more later.

Does coaching replace my supervisor? +

No. Coaching complements your supervision and works within your university's rules. Your supervisor remains your academic authority; we help you arrive better prepared. If you are unsure what your institution allows, please check its policy on external academic support.

Is coaching the same as counselling or mental-health support? +

No. Coaching is academic: it helps you do your research to a high standard and feel more confident about your own work. It is not therapy or mental-health treatment. If you are struggling with your wellbeing, please also reach out to a qualified professional or your institution's student support service.

How is AI handled in coaching? +

We guide the ethical, responsible use of AI in research: where it helps, where it must not be used, and how to stay on the right side of academic integrity. AI is never used to write your work for you.

How do I pay, and in what currency? +

You book through secure checkout. Prices show in your local currency automatically, by your location (KES, NGN, GHS and more), and that is the currency you pay in. Payment confirms your enrolment, then you book your sessions with your coach.
