One-on-One Academic Writing Skills Coaching for African PhD Students

A PhD is examined on ideas, but it advances or stalls on craft. Each week a coach demonstrates a writing technique or a research tool, then watches you practise it on your own work, screen to screen, correcting you until it is automatic. You build the mechanics and the digital literacy your thesis depends on, and you stay the author throughout.

One coach, hands-on · One live session a week, up to an hour · Built for African PhD students

Why coaching works

Why coaching works, where self-study alone does not.

A skill is acquired by doing it under guidance, not by watching. You can read about a citation style or a section break and still freeze when you have to do it yourself. Coaching is where the skill becomes yours: you do the technique, a coach who can see your screen corrects you in the moment, and the work is focused on the gaps you actually have. Open any pillar below to see how it moves your thesis.

You do it, you do not just watch

Every module follows the same learning loop. The coach demonstrates the technique, you do it yourself on your own material, and you are corrected and checked until it is automatic. You never simply watch a video alone and hope it sticks.

Why this matters: A tool you do not drive is a tool you do not own. Practising the skill yourself is what makes it yours.

What this means for you
  • The coach demonstrates, then you practise the same technique yourself
  • You drive the tools; the coach guides, on screen
  • You are corrected as you go, until the technique is automatic
  • Hands-on practice, not a passive lecture
  • The skill becomes yours, not the coach's

Across the coaching: this doing-it-yourself loop runs through all ten modules, from setting up your tools to producing a clean thesis document.

One coach in your week

You work with one coach who stays with you for the whole engagement. They come to know your thesis, your field and your habits, so the guidance is specific to you rather than generic advice repeated to a room.

Why this matters: Continuity compounds. A coach who already knows your work can go straight to what matters, week after week.

What this means for you
  • The same coach for the whole package
  • One live session a week, up to an hour, on Google Meet
  • Guidance tuned to your thesis, not a generic curriculum
  • A coach who fills the gap between supervision meetings
  • Momentum built and held across the weeks

Note: your coach never replaces or overrules your supervisor. They work alongside supervision, so the drafts you take back are already sharper.

See the ten modules

Practice on your own thesis

You practise every technique on the document that matters, your own thesis, or on set exercises if you are equipping ahead of writing. The search you build, the library you organise, the paragraph you draft and the styles you set are all on your real work.

Why this matters: Skill applied to your own file turns into thesis progress the same week, not abstract knowledge you still have to transfer.

What this means for you
  • You work on your own chapters, not sample documents
  • Every session moves your actual thesis forward
  • Techniques land in the context where you will use them
  • Set exercises are available if you are equipping ahead of writing
  • Small, achievable progress on the document that counts

The bright line: you drive the work throughout. The coach guides and corrects, but never writes your thesis for you.

See the ten modules

Correction in the moment

Because the coach can see your screen, you are corrected the instant a technique slips, not weeks later on a returned draft. A search that goes wide, a citation that misbehaves, a paragraph that lists instead of arguing, all fixed while you are still in the work.

Why this matters: Correction in the moment is the fastest way to build a skill. You do not carry the mistake into the next chapter.

What this means for you
  • Live screen-sharing, so the coach sees exactly what you do
  • Mistakes caught and fixed as they happen
  • Feedback on your own file, not on a generic example
  • The hour spent on substance, because your practice is reviewed first
  • A written summary of the fixes within five working days

How it lands: you leave each session with three concrete things to practise, so the correction turns straight into your next week of work.

A rhythm that fits a real life

Most PhD students are doing this around work, family or distance. The coaching is built for exactly that. The hands-on practice happens in your own writing days, and the one hour with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up.

Why this matters: An hour a week becomes a thesis written, because the rhythm respects the little time a working, parenting or caring candidate can spare.

What this means for you
  • You practise in your own protected writing blocks
  • One live hour a week, at a time you choose
  • You send your practice by Day 5, the coach reviews it before you meet
  • Book, reschedule and cancel your sessions yourself
  • Momentum that fits around work, family and distance

Your week, mapped: the switcher further down the page walks through each day, from your practice to your sixty-minute hour.

Skills you keep for good

The academic writing skills and the digital literacy you build in coaching do not expire when this thesis is bound. Built once, they carry you through the remaining chapters, and through the papers, reports and proposals that come after.

Why this matters: You are not renting help for one deadline. You are building a craft that serves every piece of research you ever produce.

What this means for you
  • Sourcing, citation and writing skills that stay with you
  • Tool fluency, from citation software to MS Word, for good
  • Craft that carries into papers, reports and future proposals
  • Six months of e-learning access to replay every module
  • Independence you keep long after the coaching ends

A skill you own, not a service you rent.

Coaching builds the writing craft and the tool fluency into you, so you can do the work yourself, on this thesis and every project after it. You stay the author throughout, and the skills stay with you for good.

What we coach, module by module

Ten coaching modules, each removes a specific drag on your thesis.

Every module follows the same loop: the coach demonstrates the technique, you practise it on your own work, and you are corrected until it is automatic. Together they carry you from setting up your tools to producing a clean thesis document. The path below moves on its own from 01 to 10; hover the card or use the pause button to take your time, or select any step to jump.

Your journey, 01 to 10

Your week, with a coach in it

How an hour a week becomes a thesis written.

Most PhD students juggle the thesis with work and family, so coaching has to fit a real week. The hands-on work happens in your writing days, where you practise the skill and the tool on your own material. The hour with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up. Here is what each day looks like.

    Days 1 & 2

Practise last week's skill on your own work

The first two days are spent doing the thing you and your coach worked through in the session: rebuild the search you started together, tidy the references in your library, set the styles on your own file, or rewrite the paragraph to the structure you agreed.

This is the smallest, most achievable kind of progress: applying a skill you have just been shown, on the document that matters. Most PhD students find these the most productive days of the week.

    • Apply the toolDo the technique on your real work, do not just admire it.
    • Small, sure progressA skill you have just been shown, on the file that counts.
    Days 3 & 4

Advance the chapter into new territory

Now the harder practice. You push the skill into new territory: a fuller search, a tougher synthesis, a stretch of writing, using the tool you are building, on your own work or a set exercise.

This is where doctoral work feels lonely; you sit with the page until words arrive. Even imperfect drafts are better than none, and your coach will sharpen what you wrote.

    • Defended blocksTwo or three protected hours, around work and family.
    • Draft anywayThe cost of writing nothing is a session with nothing to work on.
    Day 5

Bring your practice, send your questions

You send your coach what you practised this week: the search you built, the library you organised, the paragraph you drafted, the styles you set on a working file.

You add two or three specific questions, the places the technique did not click. Sending it by Day 5 gives your coach two full working days to review your practice before you meet, and that is what makes the session substantive.

    • Two or three questionsSpecific gaps, not a wish list.
    • Sent by Day 5So your hour is worked, not wasted on catch-up.
    Day 6

Your coach reviews your practice carefully

Behind the scenes, your coach goes through what you practised: noting where the technique slipped, which step to demonstrate again, and the hands-on work to do with you tomorrow, the search to rebuild, the citations to fix, the styles to set.

You are not idle on Day 6. You are reading, practising or resting. But the substantive coaching work for the week is already under way on what you practised.

    • Reviewed beforeSo the hour starts on substance, from the first minute.
    • Worked through afterThe fixes for your session are prepared in advance.
    Day 7

    Your sixty-minute hour, hands-on

You arrive with your practice already reviewed, so the hour is substantive from the first minute. You share your screen and do the technique together: rebuild the search, fix the citation style, set the section breaks, sharpen the paragraph, while the coach guides and you drive.

You leave with three concrete things to practise for the coming week, so the momentum carries straight into your next writing days.

    • You drive, coach guidesThe technique done together, live on screen.
    • Three next stepsEvery hour ends with clear practice for the week.
    After the session

A written summary of the fixes

Within five working days of your session, a written summary of the fixes follows, so nothing from the hour is lost and you can act on it in your own time.

That summary, plus your three practice tasks, is what turns one live hour into a full week of forward motion, and it repeats, week after week, until the thesis is written.

    • Within five working daysThe fixes in writing, yours to keep.
    • Momentum, repeatedOne hour a week, compounded across the engagement.

Plays through on its own. Hover to pause, or click any day to jump.

A view of one coaching week. The practice happens in your writing days, and your live hour is reserved for substantive, hands-on work.

    Inside the coaching

What a session actually looks like.

Every session runs the same way, so you always know what to expect and how to prepare.

    What you gain

What you will be able to do, once the coaching has done its work.

Coaching builds the mechanics and the digital literacy your thesis depends on, into you. These are the skills you walk away able to use yourself, on this thesis and every piece of research after it.

    01

Find the evidence any section needs, fast

Go straight to the current, relevant, information-rich material each objective needs, judge a source before you commit hours to it, and reach paywalled papers through legitimate, free routes.

    02

Command your library and automate your citations

Keep one organised, searchable library and retrieve any source on demand, with in-text citations and a reference list that stay in perfect, style-compliant agreement however much you change.

    03

Write prose that argues, and stays original

Synthesise many sources into your own researcher's voice, paraphrase and cite properly, and read a Turnitin report so a similarity flag stops being a threat.

    04

Build Chapters One, Two and Three that hold up

Write an introduction a panel accepts, a literature review that argues to a gap, and a methodology whose every choice follows from your objectives, so chapters come back for correction far less.

    05

Produce a clean thesis document, for good

Make a long MS Word file renumber and rebuild itself and obey you, and keep every skill so it carries into the papers, reports and proposals that follow.

    What scholars say

From the PhD students now writing.

I had a reference library that was a mess and a literature chapter that just listed studies. In a few weeks my coach showed me how to clean the library, cite while I wrote, and turn the chapter into an argument. I was doing it myself by the end, which is what I actually needed.

I used to lose whole weekends fighting MS Word over the contents page and the numbering. We set the styles up together on my own file, on screen, and it has obeyed me ever since. The coaching paid for itself in the time I stopped wasting.

I used to struggle to find current, relevant papers for my topic. My coach showed me how to go straight to the material each objective needed, and suddenly I was finding strong, recent studies instead of loosely related ones. It changed how I read the field.

Referencing by hand was eating my evenings and my list never matched the style. My coach set the software up with me and now the citations and the reference list just look after themselves, however much I change the chapter.

Is this a coaching programme or a course? +

It is one-on-one coaching. You work with a coach who, each week, demonstrates the techniques and guides you hands-on through the writing and the tools while you practise them yourself. That is different from our self-paced courses, which teach the same craft as structured modules you study alone. Coaching is the higher-touch, higher-value option for applying the skills to your specific work; the courses are the lower-cost way to build the basics. Most PhD students use both, in sequence.

Will my coach do my coursework or run the tools for me? +

No, and that is the bright line. Your coach demonstrates each technique and reviews how you apply it, but you do the practice and drive every tool yourself. The coaching builds your skill; it never does the academic work you will submit for assessment. That is precisely what keeps the learning, and your degree, honestly yours.

I am weak with MS Word, referencing and finding sources. Will you really teach me the tools? +

Yes. The tools are half the programme, and they are taught hands-on, on your own files, usually with screen-sharing. The first module even sets your computer up with you, installing and configuring your citation software. From there you learn to find and organise your reference materials, cite while you write inside MS Word, and set the styles, contents and numbering on your own document. You do not need to know any of it beforehand; you need only be willing to drive while the coach guides.

Do I need to already know how to write academically? +

No. The academic writing craft, the paragraph, the funnel, the synthesis and the citation conventions, is exactly what the coaching builds. What you need to bring is a computer with MS Word, a reliable internet connection, and a few protected hours to practise each week. Everything else is what we work on together.

How does the weekly rhythm work? +

You practise through the week, send your practice and two or three specific questions by Day 5, and meet your coach for one live hour at the weekend, sharing your screen to do the techniques together. Because your coach has reviewed your practice beforehand, the hour is substantive from the first minute. You leave with three things to practise, and a written summary of the fixes follows within five working days.

Will my supervisor be enough? Why do I need coaching as well? +

Your supervisor remains your supervisor; we do not replace them. The honest reality is that most African postgraduate supervisors carry many students alongside heavy teaching and administrative loads, which leaves limited time to sit with a draft line by line or to coach the tools. That structural shortage is not their fault. Coaching fills the gap between supervision meetings: weekly, hands-on, focused on the writing and the tools, so the work you take back to your supervisor is already sharper.

How do I pay, and can I use mobile money? +

You enrol through secure checkout and pay in your local currency, by card, bank transfer or mobile money where it is supported. Payment confirms your place, and we then email you instructions for booking your weekly sessions. If you are unsure which package fits before you pay, email your situation to info@aosars.com or use the no-commitment options above.
