One-to-OneData Analysis Coachingfor African Master's Students in Social Sciences

The fear that stops many Master's students cold: standing at your defence unable to explain a coefficient you did not truly produce. You struggle to move from a raw questionnaire to correct, defensible analysis, then to interpret your results persuasively and cohesively and tie them to your literature review. Each week your coach sits with you, in SPSS, building the skill to do it yourself. You stay the analyst throughout.

One coach, hands-on · One live session a week, up to an hour · Built for African Master's social sciences students

Why coaching works

Why coaching works, where self-study alone does not.

A skill is acquired by doing it under guidance, not by watching. You can read about a regression table or a coding scheme and still freeze when the raw questionnaire is in front of you and the analysis has to be correct and defensible. Coaching is where the skill becomes yours: you run the analysis on your own data, your coach explains and corrects in the moment, and each week adds another piece your results depend on, from turning returns into a clean dataset to testing reliability and validity, descriptives, correlation, regression and hypothesis testing, using AI honestly, and a results section you can present and defend. Open any pillar below to see how it moves your thesis.

You do it, you do not just watch

Every module follows the same learning loop. The coach demonstrates the technique on SPSS, you run it yourself on your own dataset, and you are corrected and checked until it is automatic. You never simply watch a video alone and hope it sticks.

Why this matters: An SPSS output you did not run is one you cannot defend. Running the analysis yourself is what makes the competence, and the results, unmistakably yours.

What this means for you
  • The coach demonstrates a test, then you run the same test yourself in SPSS
  • You drive SPSS; the coach guides you through every run
  • You are corrected as you go, until the technique is automatic
  • Hands-on practice, not a passive lecture
  • The skill becomes yours, not the coach's

Across the coaching: this doing-it-yourself loop runs through all nine modules, from a raw dataset to a written results section.

One coach in your week

You work with one coach who stays with you for the whole engagement. They come to know your dataset, your field and your habits, so the guidance is specific to you rather than generic advice repeated to a room.

Why this matters: Continuity compounds. A coach who already knows your work can go straight to what matters, week after week.

What this means for you
  • The same coach for the whole package
  • Weekly live one-to-one sessions, up to 60 minutes, on video
  • Guidance tuned to your dataset, not a generic curriculum
  • A coach who fills the gap between supervision meetings
  • Momentum built and held across the weeks

Note: your coach never replaces or overrules your supervisor. They work alongside supervision, so the analysis you take back is already sharper.

See the ten modules

Practice on your own dataset

You practise every technique on the data that matters, your own dataset, or on a practice dataset if you are equipping ahead of your fieldwork. The variables you code, the descriptives you run, the regression you fit and the results paragraph you draft are all on your real data.

Why this matters: Skill applied to your own dataset turns into thesis progress the same week, not abstract knowledge you still have to transfer.

What this means for you
  • You work on your own dataset, or a practice dataset if you are equipping ahead
  • Every session moves your actual analysis forward
  • Techniques land in the context where you will use them
  • A practice dataset is provided if you do not yet have your own
  • Small, achievable progress on the dataset that counts

The bright line: you drive the work throughout. The coach guides and corrects, but never runs your analysis or writes your results section for you.

See the ten modules

Correction in the moment

Because the coach reviews your actual work, you are corrected the instant a technique slips, not weeks later on a returned draft. A regression that overreaches, a coefficient read the wrong way, a correlation mistaken for cause, all fixed while you are still in the output.

Why this matters: Correction in the moment is the fastest way to build a skill. You do not carry the mistake into the next test.

What this means for you
  • Close feedback, so the coach sees exactly what you did
  • Mistakes caught and fixed as they happen
  • Feedback on your own SPSS output, not on a generic example
  • The hour spent on substance, because your practice is reviewed first
  • A written summary of the fixes within five working days

How it lands: you leave each session with three concrete things to practise, so the correction turns straight into your next week of work.

A rhythm that fits a real life

Most Master's students are doing this around work, family or distance. The coaching is built for exactly that. The hands-on practice happens in your own analysis days, and the hour with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up.

Why this matters: An hour a week becomes an analysis you can defend, because the rhythm respects the little time a working, parenting or caring candidate can spare.

What this means for you
  • You practise in your own protected analysis blocks
  • A weekly live hour, at a time you choose
  • You send your practice by Day 5, the coach reviews it before you meet
  • Book, reschedule and cancel your sessions yourself on Calendly
  • Momentum that fits around work, family and distance

Your week, mapped: the switcher further down the page walks through each day, from your practice to your sixty-minute hour.

Skills you keep for good

The data analysis skills and the SPSS fluency you build in coaching do not expire when this thesis is bound. Built once, they carry you through the remaining chapters, and through the papers, reports and analyses that come after.

Why this matters: You are not renting help for one deadline. You are building a craft that serves every piece of research you ever produce.

What this means for you
  • Dataset cleaning, coding and SPSS setup that stay with you
  • Descriptive, correlation and regression fluency, for good
  • Reading and defending a coefficient, in this thesis and the next
  • Six months of e-learning access to replay every module
  • Independence you keep long after the coaching ends

A skill you own, not a service you rent.

Coaching builds the analysis skills and the SPSS fluency into you, so you can do the work yourself, on this thesis and every project after it. You stay the analyst throughout, and the skills stay with you for good.

What we coach, module by module

Ten coaching modules, each removes a specific drag on your analysis.

Every module follows the same loop: the coach demonstrates the technique, you practise it on your own dataset, and you are corrected until it is automatic. Together they carry you from designing your instrument to defending your results at the defence. The path below moves on its own from 01 to 10; hover the card or use the pause button to take your time, or select any step to jump.

Your journey, 01 to 10

Your week, with a coach in it

How an hour a week becomes an analysis you can defend.

Most Master's students juggle the thesis with work and family, so coaching has to fit a real week. The hands-on work happens in your analysis days, where you practise the test and the SPSS run on your own dataset. The hour with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up. Here is what each day looks like.

    Days 1 & 2

Practise last week's skill on your own dataset

The first two days are spent doing the thing you and your coach worked through in the session: re-run the analysis you started together, clean the dataset, recode the variables you agreed, or rebuild the descriptives table to the layout you set.

This is the smallest, most achievable kind of progress: applying a skill you have just been shown, on the dataset that matters. Most Master's students find these the most productive days of the week.

    • Apply the toolRun the technique on your real dataset, do not just watch SPSS do it.
    • Small, sure progressA skill you have just been shown, on the data that counts.
    Days 3 & 4

Advance the analysis into new territory

Now the harder practice. You push the skill into new territory: a fuller correlation matrix, a first regression model, a run of hypothesis tests, using SPSS on your own dataset or a set exercise.

This is where the analysis feels lonely; you sit with the output until it makes sense. Even a rough run is better than none, and your coach will sharpen how you read it.

    • Defended blocksTwo or three protected hours, around work and family.
    • Run anywayThe cost of running nothing is a session with no output to work on.
    Day 5

Bring your practice, send your questions

You send your coach what you practised this week: the dataset you cleaned, the variables you coded, the descriptives you ran, the regression output you produced.

You add two or three specific questions, the places the output did not make sense. Sending it by Day 5 gives your coach two full working days to review your practice before you meet, and that is what makes the session substantive.

    • Two or three questionsSpecific gaps, not a wish list.
    • Sent by Day 5So your hour is worked, not wasted on catch-up.
    Day 6

Your coach reviews your practice carefully

Behind the scenes, your coach goes through what you practised: noting where the interpretation slipped, which step to demonstrate again, and the hands-on work to do with you tomorrow, the analysis to re-run, the variables to recode, the coefficients to read.

You are not idle on Day 6. You are reading, practising or resting. But the substantive coaching work for the week is already under way on the output you produced.

    • Reviewed beforeSo the hour starts on substance, from the first minute.
    • Worked through afterThe fixes for your session are prepared in advance.
    Day 7

    Your sixty-minute hour, hands-on

You arrive with your practice already reviewed, so the hour is substantive from the first minute. You work the technique together: re-run the analysis, fix the coding, run the regression, read the coefficients, sharpen the results paragraph, while the coach guides and you drive.

You leave with three concrete things to practise for the coming week, so the momentum carries straight into your next analysis days.

    • You drive, coach guidesThe technique done together on your own dataset.
    • Three next stepsEvery hour ends with clear practice for the week.
    After the session

A written summary of the fixes

Within five working days of your session, a written summary of the fixes follows, so nothing from the hour is lost and you can act on it in your own time.

That summary, plus your three practice tasks, is what turns one live hour into a full week of forward motion, and it repeats, week after week, until the results section is written.

    • Within five working daysThe fixes in writing, yours to keep.
    • Momentum, repeatedOne hour a week, compounded across the engagement.

Plays through on its own. Hover to pause, or click any day to jump.

A view of one coaching week. The practice happens in your analysis days, and your live hour is reserved for substantive, hands-on work.

    Inside the coaching

What a session actually looks like.

Every session runs the same way, so you always know what to expect and how to prepare.

    What you gain

What you will be able to do, once the coaching has done its work.

Coaching builds the analysis skills and the SPSS fluency your thesis depends on, into you. These are the things you walk away able to do yourself, on this dataset and every study after it.

    01

Design a valid, reliable research instrument

Turn each objective into clean, measurable items, check content validity and reliability, and pilot and refine your questionnaire before you collect a single response.

    02

Collect and clean your own dataset

Take a raw questionnaire dataset from collection to a clean, analysis-ready file: handle missing values, spot and fix miscoded entries, and know your data is sound before a single test is run.

    03

Set up your variables and SPSS the right way

Turn a questionnaire into a correctly coded SPSS file: define your variables, label the values, enter Likert and frequency responses, and build a dataset SPSS can actually analyse.

    04

Run and read your descriptive statistics

Produce the frequencies, means and distributions your results section opens with, and read every descriptive figure so you can say what it means, not just where it sits in the table.

    05

Test relationships with correlation and regression

Run the correct correlation and linear regression for your objectives, interpret each coefficient in plain language, and know what the model can and cannot claim, so it never overreaches.

    06

Run your hypothesis tests and defend your results section

Choose and run the right hypothesis test for each hypothesis, write an impactful results section from your own output, and explain where every number came from when a supervisor probes it at the defence.

    What scholars say

From the Master's students now running their own analysis.

My questionnaire data came in as a mess of blank cells and miscoded answers, and I had no idea where to start. Week by week my coach sat with me while I cleaned the dataset and set the variables up properly in SPSS, until I could prepare my own data without panicking. I was doing it myself by the end, which is what I actually needed.

I could open SPSS but I froze the moment I had to run anything and explain it. We worked through the descriptive statistics together on my own dataset, and now I can read every frequency and mean and say what it means. The coaching paid for itself the first time my supervisor asked.
    Master's candidate, Public Administration
    Southern Africa · Coaching
I had been ready to pay someone to run my regression because I did not understand it. My coach showed me how to build the model myself, and suddenly I could explain what every coefficient was telling me. It changed how I saw my whole analysis.
    Master's candidate, Development Studies
    West Africa · Coaching
I was terrified of standing in my defence unable to explain my own results table. We ran the hypothesis tests together and wrote the results section in my own words, and now I can defend every figure as my own work, because it is.

Is this a coaching programme or a course? +

It is one-to-one coaching. You work with a single human coach who, each week, demonstrates the techniques and guides you hands-on through SPSS while you run the analysis yourself. That is different from our self-paced courses, which teach the same statistics as structured modules you study alone. Coaching is the higher-touch, higher-value option for applying the skills to your own dataset; the courses are the lower-cost way to build the basics. Many Master's students use both, in sequence.

I am still collecting my data. Is this for me, or only once I have a full dataset? +

It is built for both. The nine modules carry you from dataset collection and cleaning, through questionnaire and SPSS setup, descriptives, correlation, regression and hypothesis testing, to a written results section. Whether you are still gathering questionnaires or already sitting on raw data, the coaching meets you where your work is and takes it forward from there.

Will my coach run my analysis or write my results section for me? +

No, and that is the bright line. Your coach demonstrates each technique and reviews how you apply it, but you run every SPSS test and write every results paragraph yourself. The coaching builds your capacity to run, interpret and defend the analysis; it never produces the output you submit. That is precisely what lets you stand in your defence and explain where every coefficient came from, because the work is unmistakably yours.

Do I need my own dataset to start? +

No. AOSARS supplies a practice questionnaire dataset that you can carry all the way to a written results section, so you can start with no topic and no data of your own, including at the top tier. If you already have your own questionnaire or thesis dataset in progress, you are welcome to bring it in, and at Tier 3 the coach works through your own dataset with you to the results section.

I am weak with SPSS and statistics. Will you really teach me the tools? +

Yes. The tools are the heart of the programme, and they are taught hands-on, on your own dataset, with close feedback. An early module sets SPSS up with you and builds your questionnaire-to-SPSS data entry template. From there you learn to define and code variables, run and read descriptives, build correlations and regressions, and run hypothesis tests. You do not need to know any of it beforehand; you need only be willing to drive while the coach guides.

How does the weekly rhythm work? +

You practise in SPSS through the week, send your output and two or three specific questions by Day 5, and meet your coach for weekly live one-to-one sessions of up to sixty minutes on video, booked through Calendly, to work the techniques together. Because your coach has reviewed your practice beforehand, the hour is substantive from the first minute. You leave with three things to practise, and a written summary of the fixes follows within five working days.

Will my supervisor be enough? Why do I need coaching as well? +

Your supervisor remains your supervisor; we do not replace them. The honest reality is that most African postgraduate supervisors carry many students alongside heavy teaching and administrative loads, which leaves limited time to sit beside a student through every SPSS run. That structural shortage is not their fault. Coaching fills the gap between supervision meetings: weekly, hands-on, focused on the analysis and the interpretation, so the results you take back to your supervisor are already defensible.

How do I pay, and can I use mobile money? +

You enrol through secure checkout and pay in your local currency, by card, bank transfer or mobile money where it is supported. Payment confirms your place, and we then email you instructions for booking your weekly sessions. If you are unsure which package fits before you pay, email your situation to info@aosars.com or use the no-commitment options above.
