One-to-OneGrant Writing Coachingfor African Scholars

A funding call is won or lost on craft, not ideas alone: a TOR you half-read, a budget that will not reconcile, a proposal that drifts from the call, a defence you freeze in. Each week your coach works one part of your live grant with you, from the compliance read to the pitch, correcting your drafts and numbers until the application is compliant, well costed and defensible, and yours.

One coach, hands-on · Ten weekly sessions, sixty to ninety minutes · Built for African scholars

Why coaching works

Why coaching works, where self-study alone does not.

A skill is acquired by doing it under guidance, not by watching. You can read about a compliance matrix or a budget narrative and still freeze when you have to do it yourself. Coaching is where the skill becomes yours: you do the technique on your own live TOR, your coach gives close feedback in the moment, and each week adds another craft your grant application depends on, from reading the call and costing the work to writing the proposal and defending it. Open any pillar below to see how it moves your application.

You do it, you do not just watch

Every module follows the same learning loop. The coach demonstrates the technique, you do it yourself on your own material, and you are corrected and checked until it is automatic. You never simply watch a video alone and hope it sticks.

Why this matters: A tool you do not drive is a tool you do not own. Practising the skill yourself is what makes it yours.

What this means for you
  • The coach demonstrates, then you practise the same technique yourself
  • You drive the tools; the coach guides you through the work
  • You are corrected as you go, until the technique is automatic
  • Hands-on practice, not a passive lecture
  • The skill becomes yours, not the coach's

Across the coaching: this doing-it-yourself loop runs through all ten modules, from decoding the TOR to rehearsing your grant defence.

One coach in your week

You work with one coach who stays with you for the whole engagement. They come to know your application, your field and your habits, so the guidance is specific to you rather than generic advice repeated to a room.

Why this matters: Continuity compounds. A coach who already knows your work can go straight to what matters, week after week.

What this means for you
  • The same coach for the whole package
  • One live session a week, sixty to ninety minutes, on a live call
  • Guidance tuned to your application, not a generic curriculum
  • A coach who checks your work before it reaches the donor
  • Momentum built and held across the weeks

Note: your coach never drafts, finalises or submits the application for you. They guide and correct, so the application you submit is your own work, made compliant and defensible.

See the ten modules

Practice on your own application

You practise every technique on the document that matters, your own live grant application, or on a live practice TOR if you do not yet have a call in hand. The compliance read you do, the inception report you draft, the budget you cost and the pitch you rehearse are all on your real work.

Why this matters: Skill applied to your own file turns into application progress the same week, not abstract knowledge you still have to transfer.

What this means for you
  • You work on your own live TOR, not sample documents
  • Every session moves your actual application forward
  • Techniques land in the context where you will use them
  • A live practice TOR is available if you do not yet have a call
  • Small, achievable progress on the document that counts

The bright line: you drive the work throughout. The coach guides and corrects, but never writes, finalises or submits your application for you.

See the ten modules

Correction in the moment

Because the coach reviews your actual work, you are corrected the instant a technique slips, not weeks later on a returned draft. A budget line that will not add up, a narrative that drifts from the TOR, an objective that does not answer the call, all fixed while you are still in the work.

Why this matters: Correction in the moment is the fastest way to build a skill. You do not carry the mistake into the next section.

What this means for you
  • Close feedback, so the coach sees exactly what you did
  • Mistakes caught and fixed as they happen
  • Feedback on your own file, not on a generic example
  • The session spent on substance, because your practice is reviewed first
  • A written summary of the fixes within five working days

How it lands: you leave each session with three concrete things to practise, so the correction turns straight into your next week of work.

A rhythm that fits a real life

Most scholars are doing this around work, family or distance. The coaching is built for exactly that. The hands-on practice happens in your own working days, and the one live session with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up.

Why this matters: An hour a week becomes an application submitted, because the rhythm respects the little time a working, parenting or caring scholar can spare.

What this means for you
  • You practise in your own protected writing blocks
  • One live session a week, at a time you choose
  • You send your practice by Day 5, the coach reviews it before you meet
  • Book, reschedule and cancel your sessions yourself
  • Momentum that fits around work, family and distance

Your week, mapped: the switcher further down the page walks through each day, from your practice to your live session.

Skills you keep for good

The grant writing skills you build in coaching do not expire when this application is submitted. Built once, they carry you through this call, and through every proposal, tender and funding application that comes after.

Why this matters: You are not renting help for one deadline. You are building a craft that serves every funding bid you ever write.

What this means for you
  • TOR reading, costing and proposal writing skills that stay with you
  • Tool fluency, from budget templates to proposal drafting, for good
  • Craft that carries into tenders, reports and future funding bids
  • Six months of e-learning access to replay every module
  • Independence you keep long after the coaching ends

A skill you own, not a service you rent.

Coaching builds the grant writing craft into you, so you can do the work yourself, on this application and every funding bid after it. You stay the author throughout, and the skills stay with you for good.

What we coach, module by module

Ten coaching modules, each removes a specific drag on your grant application.

Every module follows the same loop: the coach demonstrates the technique, you practise it on your own application, and you are corrected until it is automatic. Together they carry you from decoding your TOR to rehearsing your grant defence. The path below moves on its own from 01 to 10; hover the card or use the pause button to take your time, or select any step to jump.

Your journey, 01 to 10

Your week, with a coach in it

How an hour a week becomes a grant application submitted.

Most scholars juggle a funding deadline with work and family, so coaching has to fit a real week. The hands-on work happens in your working days, where you practise the skill and the tool on your own application. The hour with your coach is reserved for substantive work on what you already did, never for catching up. Here is what each day looks like.

    Days 1 & 2

Practise last week's skill on your own work

The first two days are spent doing the thing you and your coach worked through in the session: rebuild the compliance table you started together, cost the budget line you sketched, draft the inception section on your own file, or rewrite the objective to match the TOR.

This is the smallest, most achievable kind of progress: applying a skill you have just been shown, on the document that matters. Most scholars find these the most productive days of the week.

    • Apply the toolDo the technique on your real work, do not just admire it.
    • Small, sure progressA skill you have just been shown, on the file that counts.
    Days 3 & 4

Advance the chapter into new territory

Now the harder practice. You push the skill into new territory: a fuller budget, a tougher methodology, a stretch of proposal narrative, using the tool you are building, on your own application or a practice TOR.

This is where a solo bid feels lonely; you sit with the page until words arrive. Even imperfect drafts are better than none, and your coach will sharpen what you wrote.

    • Defended blocksTwo or three protected hours, around work and family.
    • Draft anywayThe cost of writing nothing is a session with nothing to work on.
    Day 5

Bring your practice, send your questions

You send your coach what you practised this week: the compliance read you built, the budget you costed, the inception section you drafted, the narrative you wrote on a working file.

You add two or three specific questions, the places the technique did not click. Sending it by Day 5 gives your coach two full working days to review your practice before you meet, and that is what makes the session substantive.

    • Two or three questionsSpecific gaps, not a wish list.
    • Sent by Day 5So your hour is worked, not wasted on catch-up.
    Day 6

Your coach reviews your practice carefully

Behind the scenes, your coach goes through what you practised: noting where the technique slipped, which step to demonstrate again, and the hands-on work to do with you tomorrow, the budget to rebalance, the narrative to tighten, the objective to realign.

You are not idle on Day 6. You are reading, practising or resting. But the substantive coaching work for the week is already under way on what you practised.

    • Reviewed beforeSo the hour starts on substance, from the first minute.
    • Worked through afterThe fixes for your session are prepared in advance.
    Day 7

    Your live session, hands-on

You arrive with your practice already reviewed, so the session is substantive from the first minute. You work the technique together: rebuild the budget, align the narrative to the TOR, tighten the methodology, sharpen the pitch, while the coach guides and you drive.

You leave with three concrete things to practise for the coming week, so the momentum carries straight into your next writing days.

    • You drive, coach guidesThe technique done together on your own work.
    • Three next stepsEvery hour ends with clear practice for the week.
    After the session

A written summary of the fixes

Within five working days of your session, a written summary of the fixes follows, so nothing from the hour is lost and you can act on it in your own time.

That summary, plus your three practice tasks, is what turns one live session into a full week of forward motion, and it repeats, week after week, until the application is submitted.

    • Within five working daysThe fixes in writing, yours to keep.
    • Momentum, repeatedOne hour a week, compounded across the engagement.

Plays through on its own. Hover to pause, or click any day to jump.

A view of one coaching week. The practice happens in your working days, and your live session is reserved for substantive, hands-on work.

    Inside the coaching

What a session actually looks like.

Every session runs the same way, so you always know what to expect and how to prepare.

    What you gain

What you will be able to do, once the coaching has done its work.

Coaching builds the grant writing craft your application depends on, into you. These are the skills you walk away able to use yourself, on this funding call and every bid after it.

    01

Decode any call and prove you comply

Read a TOR the way the evaluator will, separate the mandatory from the preferred, and turn the call into a compliance checklist that keeps a strong application from being disqualified on a technicality.

    02

Write an inception report that earns trust

Interpret the TOR rather than echo it, set out your understanding, scope and workplan, and frame the assignment so the technical proposal follows cleanly.

    03

Design and write a fundable technical proposal

Translate each objective into a defensible method, map your approach onto the evaluation grid, and write TOR-anchored sections an assessor can score exactly where they expect.

    04

Cost a budget that holds up line by line

Price the work honestly, structure the categories the call requires, reconcile the budget to the proposal, and justify every figure with a clear value-for-money narrative.

    05

Assemble, defend and keep the craft

Quality-check a complete, compliant submission, defend and pitch it to a panel without freezing, and keep every skill so it carries into the next funding bid.

    What scholars say

From the scholars now applying for funding.

I was staring at a donor TOR with a deadline and no idea if my proposal even complied. My coach worked through the call with me line by line, and I built a compliance checklist that caught three things that would have disqualified me. I wrote every word, but I finally knew it fit the call.

My budgets never used to reconcile with my proposals, and I could not explain half the figures. We costed it together in Excel and wrote the narrative, and now every line ties to an activity and justifies itself. The coach checked my numbers; I did the work.
    Lecturer, Climate and Environment
    Southern Africa · Coaching
I always froze the moment a panel started questioning my methodology. My coach ran a mock defence with me, again and again, until I could pitch my approach and defend the budget without panicking. I went into the real one prepared for once.
    Independent consultant, Development
    West Africa · Coaching
My proposals used to drift away from what the TOR actually asked. Working section by section, my coach kept pulling me back to the call, and the application I submitted answered every criterion exactly where the evaluator expected it. It was my writing, made compliant.

    Coaching packages

One coaching programme. Three ways to take it.

All three packages are built on the same one-to-one, hands-on coaching, and they graduate by how many modules they cover. The first trains the foundational core, modules 01 to 03, live. Is this a coaching programme or a course? +

It is one-to-one coaching. You work with a coach who, each week, demonstrates the techniques and guides you hands-on through the grant application and the tools while you practise them yourself. That is different from our self-paced courses, which teach the same craft as structured modules you study alone. Coaching is the higher-touch, higher-value option for applying the skills to your own live call; the courses are the lower-cost way to build the basics. Many scholars use both, in sequence.

I do not have a live grant opportunity yet. Can I still start? +

Yes. If you already have a live TOR or call for proposals, you bring it into the sessions and work on it directly. If you do not yet have one, you work through a live practice TOR and costing scenario supplied by AOSARS, so nobody needs a real grant opportunity in hand to begin. Either way, you leave with the skill, and at the top package you have practised every module on your own call and own the application you built.

Will my coach write the proposal or run the numbers for me? +

No, and that is the bright line. Your coach reads your TOR with you, demonstrates each technique and checks and corrects your drafts and figures, but you write every section and build every budget line yourself. The coaching makes your application compliant, well costed and defensible; it never drafts, finalises or submits it for you. That is what keeps the work, and the funding, honestly yours, and what lets you account for the application under any donor rules.

Does this cover the budget as well as the writing? +

Yes. Two full modules are spent on the budget: costing it in Excel against the call's rules and reconciling it to your proposal, then writing the budget narrative that justifies every figure and makes the value-for-money case. Mispricing and weak budget justification sink many strong bids, so the numbers are treated as seriously as the words.

I have never defended a proposal to a panel. Will you prepare me for that? +

Yes. The final module rehearses your grant defence and pitch. You practise a clear pitch of your approach and value, anticipate the hard questions on methodology, budget and capability, and run a mock panel with your coach standing in for the assessors. You leave able to defend every choice you made. A written summary of the fixes follows; no recording of the session is kept.

How does the weekly rhythm work? +

You practise through the week, send your practice and two or three specific questions by Day 5, and meet your coach for one live session to work the techniques together. Because your coach has reviewed your practice beforehand, the session is substantive from the first minute. You leave with three things to practise, and a written summary of the fixes follows within five working days.

Is this for NGO proposal writers responding to a donor call? +

Not quite. This programme is built for academic and consultancy grant seekers responding to a formal TOR or call for proposals. If you are an NGO proposal or grant writer responding to a donor call, our AIS-706 programme is designed for you instead. If you are unsure which fits your situation, email us before you enrol and we will point you to the right one.

How do I pay, and can I use mobile money? +

You enrol through secure checkout and pay in your local currency, by card, bank transfer or mobile money where it is supported. Payment confirms your place, and we then email you instructions for booking your weekly sessions. If you are unsure which package fits before you pay, email your situation to info@aosars.com or use the no-commitment options above.
